GREATER Western Sydney wingman Tom Scully has started the new year in typical fashion by taking out the club's 3km time trial on Monday.

Scully has long been the man to beat at the Giants and nothing changed at the first training session of 2018.

The 26-year-old held off the usual challengers with Adam Tomlinson, Lachie Whitfield, Tim Taranto and Matt de Boer rounding out the top five.

De Boer told gwsgiants.com.au that he's always in awe of his teammate's running ability.

"He’s a freak," he said.

"Most of the boys ran good times and presented well.

"I was with Stephen Coniglio and we were just pushing each other every lap so I’m happy with my time."

The former Fremantle midfielder, who crossed to the Giants at the end of 2016, returned to Perth for the Christmas period and put in plenty of hard work alongside fellow West Australian Zac Langdon.

A mature-aged small forward from Claremont on the WAFL, Langdon finished inside the top 10 and looks an exciting prospect.

"I think he improved on his time as well, so I think he’ll be one to watch," de Boer said.

"He’s a really good kid, (he was) asking lots of questions and he’s really trying to grow and improve as much as he can."
