COLLINGWOOD is holding out hope spring-heeled forward Will Hoskin-Elliott will be fit to face West Coast at the MCG on Sunday despite initial fears he had suffered a serious injury.

Meanwhile, an intraclub match later this week, with the VFL side having a bye, will see the returns of Jamie Elliott, Alex Fasolo, James Aish and Jarryd Blair.

Hoskin-Elliott was hurt in the first quarter of the win over Essendon but played out the contest despite suffering a badly bruised right leg.

A relieved Magpies football manager Geoff Walsh told collingwoodfc.com.au the former Giant needed to be assessed.

"It pleasingly has turned out to be a little bit better than we thought," Walsh said.

"At the time, it looked a worrying one with the front-on contact, but it turned out to be some bone bruising.

"That will be treated symptomatically. He could well be available this week. We'll just wait and see how he comes up over the next three or four days, but certainly the serious injury that we thought it was hasn't eventuated."

In any case, the Pies could soon be boosted by its returning stars.

Hamstring issues have plagued Elliott and he is yet to play a game in 2018.

That has also been a problem for Blair, while Aish hasn't been seen since round six as he dealt with a knee injury and Fasolo has been sidelined by a right ankle syndesmosis problem.

Meanwhile, a return to the main group isn't far away for Tyson Goldsack, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in March.

"He's not too far away from getting the all-clear to resume full training," Walsh said.

Ben Reid is three weeks away from full training after surgery on both knees, which is a similar timeframe that Flynn Appleby faces (right hamstring).

Big-bodied onballer Rupert Wills has his own hamstring troubles.

"That will probably be a two-week job," Walsh said.
