MARCUS Bontempelli will need to pass a fitness test on a knee injury if the superstar playmaker is to line up for an injury-hit Western Bulldogs in Saturday night's clash with North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.
There were fears Bontempelli had torn his ACL when he fell awkwardly during the third quarter of last Thursday night's loss to Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval, but he escaped with a hyperextension of his knee and played out the game.
With skipper Easton Wood and Brownlow Medal fancy Jack Macrae both succumbing to hamstring injuries against the Power, the 22-year-old will lead the struggling Dogs against the Kangaroos if he can prove his fitness.
Wood is expected to miss the remainder of the season, while Macrae is likely to be sidelined for a month.
In-form midfielder Toby McLean will also need to pass a fitness test to play after he injured his shoulder in the opening seconds against the Power, but club medical services manager Chris Bell told westernbulldogs.com.au the signs were good for the 22-year-old.
"Toby did get through the game and he's come in quite well today," Bell said.
"We'll work through a process with Toby over the next couple of days to determine his availability this weekend."
Versatile tall Tom Boyd is also in doubt with a finger injury, while fourth-year midfielder Lukas Webb will miss three weeks with a broken thumb.
Veteran Matt Suckling's troublesome Achilles has been hampering him since round nine, forcing him to miss the trip to Adelaide.
The defensive playmaker, who missed the club's 2016 Grand Final triumph with the injury, will be monitored throughout the week to determine whether he'll be available for this weekend.
It's not all bad news at Whitten Oval, with impressive draftee Aaron Naughton set to return to full training after being sidelined by an ankle injury since round eight.
The key defender is more likely to resume through the VFL if he's passed fit to play.
Marcus Adams' fortunes are taking a turn for the better after the injury-prone key defender was a solid performer for Footscray on the weekend in his return from a corked calf.
After missing the first half of the season with a serious ankle injury, Adams is good chance to play his first game of the year against the Roos.
