FORMER Collingwood star Dane Swan has outed himself as the player featured in a video of a private moment circulating on the internet.

The footage, which shows him in bed with a woman, was taken "some time ago" and recorded and posted without his consent, an angry Swan said.

"It was taken and distributed without my consent. The distribution is a gross breach of my privacy," he said in a strongly worded statement read on Nine Network's Footy Show on Thursday night.

"As it is illegal to distribute such material online without consent I have reported the matter to the police who are investigating the distribution."

Victoria Police confirmed it is investigating the video, which was distributed electronically and online.

"The video was posted without consent."

Swan, 34, a Brownlow Medallist, was recruited by Collingwood in 2001 and retired from the AFL in 2016 after suffering a foot injury.
