SYDNEY is breathing a sigh of relief after Aliir Aliir and Callum Sinclair were cleared of serious ankle damage following injuries in the club's opening JLT Community Series match against Brisbane on Saturday.

Aliir injured his ankle in the first quarter of Saturday's clash and took no further part in the game, while Sinclair landed awkwardly in the third quarter and sat out the rest of the match on the bench. 

Swans football manager Tom Harley said the injuries to the key duo were not as serious as first thought, but both were in major doubt for Friday night's JLT clash against the Giants. 

"Aliir started the game really well but he landed on an opposition player's foot so he's got a grade one syndesmosis injury,” Harley told the club's website.

"We’ll take a pretty conservative approach so we'll assess him later in the week. He’s unlikely to play against the Giants but we’ve still got some training sessions to go."

Harley said Sinclair has slight ligament damage in his ankle.

"Callum also rolled his ankle against Brisbane – he had scans today and has some really slight ligament damage. Like Aliir, we’ll be really conservative with Cal, as you don't need to be taking risks in the pre-season.

"We have our main training day on Wednesday before we pick the team, so we’ll assess them both then."

In better news for the Swans, midfielder Zak Jones is ready to return for his first match of 2018, along with ruckman Sam Naismith.

"Zak is coming into consideration for his first hit-out of the year after recovering from post-season knee surgery," Harley said.  

"Sam Naismith was a last-minute withdrawal with a tight back against the Lions, so while the two that got injured on the weekend may be in doubt, we may have two coming into the team."

Swans stars Heath Grundy, Dan Hannebery and Jarrad McVeigh are all tracking in the right direction, according to Harley, despite missing the Brisbane game.
