CARLTON'S loss to arch-enemy Collingwood on Friday night has been compounded by defender Caleb Marchbank's game-ending right ankle injury.

The 21-year-old is in doubt for the Blues' round four encounter with North Melbourne at Hobart's Blundstone Arena on Saturday week.

Marchbank went off at the 19-minute mark of the first quarter and returned to the bench at the first break wearing a brace on the ankle.

He continued to test the ankle along the boundary line as the second term began before he briefly returning to the field, only to leave for good before half-time.

Five talking points: Carlton v Collingwood

After conceding the first three goals of the game, the floodgates opened for the Pies after Marchbank's absence unsettled the Blues' backline.

"It always has some sort of effect (when a player leaves the game), but … whenever we lose someone, other teams have to deal with that as well," coach Brendon Bolton said.

"It meant we played 'Daisy' (Dale Thomas) a little more at half-back this week."

Marchbank initially lined up on Travis Varcoe, who was involved in the first two Collingwood goals via Will Hoskin-Elliott.

The Magpies kicked 10 unanswered goals either side of quarter-time and led the Blues by 36 points at half-time after trailing by 19 in the opening term.
