INJURED Fremantle midfielder Harley Bennell is five weeks away from returning to the field with WAFL affiliate Peel Thunder, coach Ross Lyon says.
And the Dockers' coach has called on Bennell to "reboot" and overcome the emotional pain brought on by his battle with repetitive calf injuries.
Fremantle is investigating Bennell's unusual behaviour during Saturday's match between Peel and Swan Districts in Mandurah.
The game, which was broadcast by Channel Seven Perth, captured the injury-plagued midfielder interrupting coach Cam Shepherd's three quarter-time address to speak to his cousin Traye Bennell.
Bennell will sit down with Dockers chief executive Steve Rosich and football manager Chris Bond on Tuesday to discuss the matter.
Despite Bennell's latest off-field hurdle, Lyon said he was optimistic the 24-year-old would line up in the WAFL in a little over a month.
"The plan is for him to play. We had a meeting last week that he'd be playing in five weeks at Peel," Lyon told Fox Footy on Monday night.
"I understand the conjecture but it's fingernail-deep analysis and it's never as simple as it seems on the surface."
The weekend's WAFL incident comes a month after Bennell was asked to leave a Gold Coast-bound flight from Melbourne due to intoxication.
Lyon said Bennell was experiencing a personal struggle due to his constant injury setbacks.
"From the time he reinjured his aponeurosis (in his calf) after he absolutely dedicated himself, clearly he's been devastated," Lyon said.
"Now if you're a professional player and potentially one of the best players in the land and you've dedicated yourself … and it implodes on you again 18 months in, people go through anger, frustration, denial, sadness, and there's no doubt somewhere on that curve he's sitting.
"But he needs to gather himself and give it meaning and come out and reboot, that's exactly where we're at."
Bennell is yet to debut with the Dockers since joining the club from Gold Coast in the 2015 NAB AFL Trade Period.
Controversy has hovered over Bennell's career since he was first recruited by the Suns with pick No.2 in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft.
In January this year he was fined for driving while suspended.
In July 2015, photos emerged of Bennell allegedly using illicit substances at a Tasmanian hotel in 2013.
