SHANE Mumford is seeking medical advice on his injured foot and degenerative knee before deciding whether to fulfil the final year of his contract at Greater Western Sydney.
During his exit meeting with GWS last week, it's understood Mumford agreed to think about how well placed he was to play on in 2018, with the parties set to catch up again for more detailed discussions.
Until then neither the Giants nor Mumford will make a final decision on his future.
Speculation GWS has also asked veteran defender Heath Shaw to consider his future is believed to be baseless.
Shaw, 31, has a year to run on his contract with the Giants and, at this time, both he and the Giants expect him to fulfil it.
Mumford's manager, Anthony McConville of Mac's Sports, told NAB AFL Trade Radio on Monday the Giants did not share his client's optimism that his body was up to another AFL season, but stressed the ruckman would play on if cleared by doctors.
"He feels that he still has plenty of footy left in him. Obviously it's whether your body will allow you to do so and the medical opinion is everything," McConville said.
"In his mind, he feels he can go again, the Giants seem to feel otherwise and they want to look after Shane as best they can. They feel he's been a great servant of the club for the period he's been there and feel like he has a lot to offer the Giants going forward outside of football.
"It's looking at what those situations are and medical opinion speaks volumes as it always should. We're just waiting on that to come through."
Asked whether there was a chance the Giants could push Mumford not to play on even if the medical report on his foot and knee was positive, McConville was emphatic: "It's purely medical. If medically Shane is fit, well he plays, simple."
McConville said he and Mumford had not discussed the possibility of the ruckman switching clubs in this year's trade period.
Mumford has been a valuable player for GWS since crossing from Sydney in the 2013 NAB AFL Trade Period.
The ruckman won the Giants' best and fairest in his first season at the club, 2014, despite missing six games with injury and has set the tone for GWS around stoppages with his robust attack on the ball and opposition players.
However, the former rookie has battled ongoing ankle injuries over the past three seasons, while a foot injury ruled him out of the Giants' last two finals this year.
After a strong opening to 2017, the 31-year-old's form dropped off towards the end of the season as he started to struggle with his body.
Mumford finished equal eighth in the Giants' 2016 best and fairest and has played 44 of a possible 49 games over the past two seasons.
