GEELONG is no clearer about the return of captain Joel Selwood, who remains uncertain to play in the Cats' clash with the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night as he recovers from concussion.

Selwood was knocked out just 45 seconds into Geelong's round 14 win over Fremantle, and was a late withdrawal for last week's draw with GWS.

Geelong coach Chris Scott said before training on Thursday that he couldn't give a definitive answer on Selwood's chances of playing.

"Based on what we've seen at training, he's looked really good. But to be frank, he looked really good last week as well and they (medical staff) said he wasn't right," Scott said.

"It's completely a medical call and I could get more involved if I chose to, but I just don't see the point."

Patrick Dangerfield will play after the birth of his first child on Tuesday night.

"His preparation has been isolated from the main group, but his physical preparation from all reports has been really positive," Scott said.

Key defender Tom Lonergan is set to play his 200th game on Saturday, overcoming the odds since his kidney was removed after a sickening clash against Melbourne in 2006.

"As his career has gone on, he's gotten better and better," Scott said. "His record on the very best key forwards would be as good as anyone."

"He is an All Australian-level player in our opinion, and the fact that his career looked like being over before it started makes it even more meritorious."

Daniel Menzel (knee), Nakia Cockatoo (hamstring) and Brandan Parfitt (hamstring) are also in the mix for selection after recovering from their respective injuries.

Scott said Geelong will need to counter many things including the Lions' midfield depth and "smart footy" to score a victory this weekend.

"We consider them to be a really dangerous team," he said.

"The ladder is not reflective at all of the contest that we're going to get on Saturday night."
