NORTH Melbourne forward Mason Wood could return in the VFL this weekend after making a speedy recovery from knee surgery.
In further good news for the Kangaroos, fellow spearhead Jarrad Waite (AC joint) is expected to return a fortnight earlier than originally forecast, with the spearhead now just two weeks away from playing.
Wood underwent an arthroscope to remove a small piece of floating bone around his knee joint last Tuesday, a procedure that was expected to sideline him for up to three weeks.
But North senior performance consultant Steve Saunders said on Wednesday Wood was aiming to play in Werribee's VFL game against Geelong on Easter Sunday.
"Due credit for this quicker than expected turn-around needs to go to the specialist that performed the procedure on Mason's knee and also to Mason himself for the attention to detail and diligence he has displayed during his recovery and rehabilitation," Saunders said.
"He'll obviously need to get through the remaining training sessions scheduled for this week but the aim is to have him available to play some game time this week."
Wood has not played since North's opening JLT Community Series game against the Sydney Swans on February 19, having injured his hamstring at training the following week.
The 23-year-old was due to return in the VFL two weeks ago before his knee problem surfaced.
Waite has been sidelined since injuring his left shoulder in a tackle late in North's round loss to West Coast.
