GEELONG skipper Joel Selwood concedes he is "touch and go" for the club's first final as he races the clock to be fit following a serious ankle injury.
Selwood required surgery for a syndesmosis injury to his left ankle following the club's 46-point loss to Sydney in round 20.
The Cats captain said he would do everything in his power to get up for the game, with Geelong to play either Greater Western Sydney, Richmond or Adelaide depending on Saturday night's result against the Giants at Simonds Stadium.
The much-spoken about pre-finals bye ahead of the first week of the finals is set to help Selwood's cause.
"It's a touch and go thing from here," Selwood told SEN.
"We'll have some sessions where we go really well and I'm sure I'll have a hiccup along the way at some stage but I don't plan on it putting me back too far."
Selwood said he was able to do some light running on the ankle on the Alter G treadmill and even on the grass of Simonds Stadium this week.
A syndesmosis injury, otherwise known as a high ankle sprain, robs an athlete of his power when pushing to take off.
So the Cats will be mindful of how that affects Selwood's speed and his agilty before making a call on his availability.
"This week I've been able to jump around and bounce around," Selwood said.
"I'm feeling really good and I've been on the Alter G running and I've got outside for the first time, too."
Selwood said the club had charted Western Bulldog Tom Liberatore's recovery time from a similar injury last year, with Liberatore having the same operation as Selwood performed by the same surgeon, Dr David Young.
Liberatore injured his ankle in round 19 against the Cats before returning for the elimination final clash against West Coast and the Dogs' memorable premiership run.
"He was around the five to six-week mark and that's similar on what I plan on doing," Selwood said.
