THE FREE agency period closed on Sunday with Geelong forward Daniel Menzel unable to find a suitor willing to offer him a deal better than the Cats' one-year offer.
He could yet be traded, but if not, is expected to stay at the club.

Former Eagle up for grabs
Mitch Brown, who was delisted by West Coast at the end of 2016, will nominate for the draft after an excellent season in the Victorian Amateur Football Association for St Kevin's, the Herald Sun reports.
Brown has lined up in the midfield rather than taking up his usual post in defence and has attracted interest from recruiters.
"This year was the one of the most enjoyable years of footy I have had. I think the midfield role in the back half of the season really gave me a new lease on life," Brown said.
"I have loved my move back to Melbourne and I'm really content with everything if I don't get another chance (at AFL) that's fine. I love my job."
Essendon stand firm on Stringer
The Bombers will not budge from their offer of picks No.25 and 30 in this year's NAB AFL Draft in exchange for Western Bulldogs forward Jake Stringer, the Herald Sun says.
It seems untenable Stringer could return to the club he helped deliver a flag to in 2016 but the Dogs remain adamant that could happen. However, his management reportedly believes it would be "an unhealthy environment for his mental health".
Stringer does not think he could play under Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge again, while his family believes the 2015 All Australian needs to move clubs to again find his best form.
Essendon traded away its first-round selection (No.11) to acquire Devon Smith from Greater Western Sydney.
Geelong's unexpected bounty
After surprisingly securing No.19 in this year's draft as compensation for Steven Motlop's move to Port Adelaide, the Cats could use it as a trade chip to land a star player, according to The Age.
With Geelong in pursuit of Gary Ablett and having shown interest in Stringer and out-of-favour Melbourne forward Jack Watts, that pick could help the Cats bring in mature talent.
Motlop took up a $2 million offer from Port over four seasons, but if he had remained at Geelong, would have received just a one-year deal, The Australian says.
