• Who's hanging up the boots? Keep track of 2017's retirements and delistings
LUKE Hodge has turned his back on retirement to continue his 305-game AFL career with the Brisbane Lions.
The Hawthorn champion announced ahead of his 300th match in July that season 2017 would be his last, but he will instead move north to play under former Hawks football manager Chris Fagan.
Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has endorsed Hodge's decision to join the Lions, who will likely give up their last draft pick in a trade with the Hawks to secure the 33-year-old.
"Luke has been an incredible servant of Hawthorn Football Club and we will support him and his family in the next step of their journey," Clarkson told hawthornfc.com.au.
"We respect Luke’s decision to take up this new opportunity presented by the Lions and understand the personal development opportunities it provides.
"Luke, Lauren, Cooper, Chase and Leo will always be welcome at Hawthorn and remain an integral part of our family.
"We look forward to celebrating Luke’s decorated career in the brown and gold at the Peter Crimmins Medal on Saturday night."
Lions hoping Hodge can play for two years
The four-time premiership star's resume is bulging with accolades, including two Norm Smith Medals, two Hawthorn best and fairests and three All Australian honours.
Hodge averaged 23.2 disposals, 6.3 marks and 3.1 rebound 50s in 19 games this year as a defender.
Mark McGrath, an in-demand movement coach employed by the Hawks, told AFL.com.au in August that Hodge was "almost the best he's been".
It is unclear exactly what his deal with the Lions will be, but there are suggestions he will play next year before moving into a coaching role.
Lions general manager of football David Noble said last week they were set to ramp up discussions with Hodge's manager, Paul Connors, of Connors Sports.
"Luke’s ability to assist with developing and nurturing our emerging group as an additional on-field leader would be a great help to us," Noble said.
