THE SWANS have been a star-studded team on the Fantasy front for years and 2017 looks to be a similar story. For most teams, losing a young gun like Tom Mitchell would be an absolute disaster, but such is the depth of the Swans' youngsters that it creates an exciting opportunity for one or more of them to elevate their game to elite status.

Isaac Heeney (FWD, $442,000) is one of the most hyped players this pre-season and rightly so. After losing many of our popular forwards this year, Heeney provides us with a someone who is going to spend plenty of time running through the midfield and increase his average accordingly … somewhere over 90 is my prediction. Last year, he managed four hundreds and a top score of 127 playing predominately as a forward so the increased opportunity and natural development moving into his traditional break-out year places him close to 'must have' status.
Callum Mills (DEF, $441,000) had an outstanding debut season, finishing the year with an average of 73 from 20 games playing down back. Similar to Heeney, Mills is a gun and more than capable of influencing the game through the middle, which obviously gives him plenty more opportunities to get his hands on the ball which would be invaluable as a Fantasy defender. Although the second year traditionally proves difficult for players in Mills' position, I think he is too good for it to be an issue. Keep an ear to the ground for his likely role in 2017.
Jake Lloyd (DEF/MID, $521,000) is coming off a great year where he increased his average from 74 to 86, mainly playing across half-back and pushing up the wings. Racking up midfield-like numbers throughout the year, it was the end of the season that really caught my eye when Lloyd averaged 111 over the last four weeks including an impressive 131 in the Fantasy Grand Final. His form over the finals series was also impressive with two scores over 90 from three appearances.
Jordan Foote (MID, $195,000) is not quite a first-year player after getting his, er, foot in the door to debut last year, resulting in a score of 43. Obviously there are players ahead of him in regard to filling Tom Mitchell’s shoes in the midfield, but he will certainly see more game time after being one of the Swans' better performers in the NEAFL, averaging 26 disposals and 105 points from his 17 games. One to keep an eye on.
Josh Kennedy (MID, $653,000) How and why Kennedy’s ownership is so low every year is beyond me. When paying the big bucks for a premium, you want durability, consistency and hopefully a little bit of upside as a sweetener. In 2017, JPK offers all of that! In the last seven years he has missed a total of three games and has not averaged below 105 in the last three with 2016’s 108 being his personal best. The cream on the cake is that he finished the year with nine hundreds in a row while averaging 119 in that time … topped off with a 139 in the Grand Final. So there is your upside!
Unfortunately, Jarrad McVeigh (DEF, $499,000) showed the first signs of dropping off last season, averaging 82 from 18 games after going at 97 for the three years previously while recording 22, 22 and 20 games in that time. In fact, durability had become one of McVeigh’s strong points, never dropping below 20 games in the last six seasons. Although 18 games is far from a disaster, the writing is on the wall given he is entering his 14th season.
