The disclaimer is it might be another 12 months before GWS pounces but there is an outside chance Darcy Bennett's opportunity might arise next week.
Bennett split his time this year between VFL club Werribee – averaging nearly 20 hitouts as a back-up, including a season-high 33 in the narrow semi-final loss to Essendon – and Geelong League team Lara.
He remains a project but featured in Lara's best players in seven of his eight appearances there in 2019, with his noticeable improvement and greater physical condition placing him on the AFL radar.
The 22-year-old also played in this year's AFL Victoria Young Guns Series, which helped propel Mitch Riordan, Kyle Dunkley and Cody Hirst to elite ranks via the NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft.
Bennett in action for the City Team in this year's Young Guns Series match.
Bennett stands 203cm and played a lot of basketball growing up but his age is somewhat of a deterrent, given he played second fiddle for much of the season at the state league Tigers.
He is now focused on football and it's believed he will have a last-minute audition with the Giants in the days leading up to next week's drafts.
PHANTOM FORM GUIDE Cal Twomey's October update
GWS brought Mumford out of retirement for this past season and he played 20 games, enough for him to trigger another year.
However, his deputy Dawson Simpson has played his final AFL campaign, while Flynn suffered an ACL tear mid-year in a NEAFL game and will start next season on the sidelines.
