ESSENDON forward Joe Daniher is searching for a specialist goalkicking coach this summer after resorting to snapping set shots across his body last season.
Daniher kicked a career-high 43.32 in 2016, leading the Bombers' goalkicking in the most productive of his four seasons.
Accuracy remained an issue for the tall forward, however, and he abandoned traditional drop punt kicking late in the season for an unorthodox set shot routine.
Coach John Worsfold said the club was on the hunt for a mentor to work with Daniher during the pre-season to improve "a critical part of his game" and help the 22-year-old take the next step in his career.
"(Assistant coach Hayden Skipworth) is helping Joe put a plan in place to make sure he improves all aspects of his game," Worsfold said.
"But goalkicking is a critical part of what he's going to get measured on as a player, so they're going to find a goalkicking expert for him.
"Joe was pretty clear on how he wanted to go about it, so I'm letting them run that process."
Former assistant David Wheadon was singled out by Worsfold as a potential candidate, but the club was not restricting the search to AFL coaches.
Daniher in August said he was aware his goalkicking needed to improve rapidly and he would spend his off-season working on a new routine.
"My goalkicking is a work in progress and I know I need to improve … I'm under no illusions that that needs to happen quick smart," Daniher said.
"I'll do a lot of work in the off-season and hopefully come back next year with a clear-cut routine.
"I've got a lot of time to work on it and come back in pre-season with something really clear that's going to hold up for 2017."
Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd had previously worked with Daniher as a specialist coach but stepped away last season to focus on his media roles.
