GREATER Western Sydney sprung a surprise at the NAB AFL Draft by selecting delisted Fremantle midfielder Matt de Boer in the fourth round.
The Giants used their sixth and final pick of the draft to select him at No.58.
De Boer, 26, played four matches this year for a total of 138 games before being cut after eight seasons at the club.
"De Boer rounds out our night as a ready-made player with great leadership, competitiveness and one of the best tacklers going around," GWS national recruiting manager Adrian Caruso said on Twitter.
The tough midfielder played in the 2013 Grand Final side that lost to Hawthorn.
He will give the Giants valuable experience next year and could be needed early in the season with midfielder Lachie Whitfield not be eligible to play until round eight after he was suspended for breaching AFL rules.
Michael Barlow was another Docker to be axed at the end of this season, and he was also given a lifeline by Gold Coast as a delisted free agent.
De Boer was the only recycled AFL player taken in this year's draft leaving ex-Dog Will Minson and former Roo Drew Petrie to hope for a rookie spot.
