JUSTIN Leppitsch says he has the support of Brisbane Lions deputy chairman Leigh Matthews, but concedes "what will be, will be" when it comes to his future.

Leppitsch is contracted until the end of 2017, however, club chairman Bob Sharpless recently confirmed the coach's job would be reviewed at season's end.

The Lions have endured a horror season, notching just three wins, but Leppitsch has remained steadfast in his belief they are on the right track.

On Wednesday night, Matthews – Leppitsch's greatest public supporter – said he knew nothing about the likelihood of the three-year coach continuing into next season.

Lethal blow? Matthews backs off Leppitsch

When asked on 5AA radio on Wednesday night if his allegiances lay with Leppitsch, Matthews was firm.

"No, no, no, no, my flag is next to the Brisbane Lions' best interest," he said.

"Everyone that knows me, knows that.

"Let's not kid ourselves here. Whatever happens in my footy life, the team comes first - always has, always will.

"If you're asking that specific question of my philosophy about football clubs, let's not kid ourselves, that's the case."

While Leppitsch said he didn't take much notice of the external commentary, the honest conversations he has with Matthews were a constant.

"I remember my retirement; he wouldn't give me a retirement game. Leigh's always been about the team … I know that," Leppitsch said.

"That's what I love about Leigh, his honest nature. He's upfront in an industry where there's not a lot of people like that.

"I appreciate and respect that's the way he goes about his business.

"All I know is when I speak to the man. What the public perceive him and his actions to be, I don't know.

"The only thing I can tell you is the conversations we've had, he's been great, very supportive and upfront."

Leppitsch said their relationship was "out of 10, probably nine" because of the straight conversations.

The coach said his primary focus was to try to finish the season with wins over Geelong and St Kilda.

"If there's stuff going on in the background, maybe you guys know more than me and maybe you're right.

"I'm just here to coach the team, coach this week and get another win and another win next week.

"I'm contracted next year and that's all I'm going to do.

"I'm very one-dimensional, I'm here for me and my boys, and that's it. What will be, will be."
