VIC METRO captain Katherine Smith says the huge 95-point margin against Western Australia at the MCG last Friday was the result of a group effort.
Metro kept Western Australia scoreless in the last match of the AFL youth girls' national championships, claiming the title for the second straight year.
Smith was named her team's fairest and best player in the Grand Final for her efforts across half-forward, setting up numerous goals and kicking the game's first.
Metro had a slow start, with Smith's goal coming after nine minutes of play, but their pressure to keep the ball inside their forward half was noticeable.
"You give thanks to the mids and backs who get it in there for you. They kept pressuring until we got a result," the 17-year-old Smith said after the game.
Although Metro went to quarter-time with a 19-point advantage, it was Izzy Huntington who broke the game open with four second-quarter goals. Smith was full of praise for one of her vice-captains.
"The way she plays is unreal, (especially) her marking and how smart she is with the footy.
"Having her as one of my vice-captains this year was great."
Smith said coach Wayne Siekman's decision to rest several of his senior players in their previous match allowed some of the younger girls to prove themselves in less-familiar positions.
"It was a great opportunity to see whether a few girls could play other positions, and see how they could influence the final.
"(Olivia) Vesely worked off half-back after running through the midfield earlier in the week, and she did it again in the final," Smith said.
"It was also good to rest a few other girls who had had a really hard week [three games in four days before the Grand Final] and had a few bumps and bruises."
The Grand Final marked Siekman's last game in charge of the Metro girls after four years of involvement with the team – three as coach and one running the backline. It was also Smith's last match at youth level.
"I've never seen a man put so much into female football. What he's done for us has been amazing," Smith said.
"I'm incredibly grateful to finish at the same time as him."
