STARS of the game have described Wednesday’s announcement of the inaugural teams of the AFL women’s league as a ‘pinch yourself’ moment.
The group at the MCG event included Daisy Pearce, Tayla Harris, Darcy Vescio, Brianna Davey, Lauren Arnell and Sabrina Frederick-Traub, as well as a lot of excited young girls wearing footy gear.
Eight teams named for inaugural women's league
Brianna Davey, the cross-code star who splits her time between the Bulldogs and the Melbourne City soccer team as a goalkeeper, described it "an incredible occasion."
"I was saying to the girls before, it’s one of those 'pinch yourself' moments," she said.
"I was so nervous, I felt like I was about to run out and play a game."
Key position player Tayla Harris, who is likely to play for the Brisbane Lions, said she was relieved the wait for the competing teams was over, and was looking forward to the league getting underway.
"It’s something we’ve been waiting a while for. For the past couple of months, we weren’t sure when this was going to happen, and to what scale.
"It’s finally happened – we know the teams and we can really get stuck into training."
The eight clubs were to be briefed by the AFL on Wednesday afternoon, with discussions to focus on player signing and drafting rules.
