RODNEY Eade has given his first hint about who might replace Gary Ablett as Gold Coast's captain.
While agreeing big forward Tom Lynch and key defender Steven May were the frontrunners to fill the role, the Suns' coach said he wasn't a fan of co-captains.
The popular theory has been that either Lynch would captain on his own, or the bookends would share the duties.
But Eade has now cast doubt over the latter option.
"I've always been one that hasn’t been sold on the idea to be honest," Eade said.
"Maybe I'm old-school.
"But it has been successful at Sydney, GWS have got it at the moment, so it's something that has been discussed and talked about internally."
Although speculation has surrounded the Suns' captaincy for months, Ablett officially stepped down from the role last week after informing his teammates.
Eade confirmed the pair had come to a mutual agreement at Ablett's end-of-season review in August.
Lynch and May alternated as captains for the final six weeks of last season after Ablett required surgery on his dislocated left shoulder.
The dual Brownlow medallist said last week that both men had proved they could lead the club.
"I think the biggest challenge for young guys like that in a leadership position, (with) the extra responsibilities that come with being a captain, is still being able to perform on the footy field," Ablett said.
"Tom Lynch had a great year and so did Steven May.
"I'm happy stepping down knowing the club's in good hands."
Eade said the captaincy announcement would be made before Christmas.
