RYAN Griffen is not far off a return but may have to come back through the reserves, says GWS coach Leon Cameron.

The Giants midfielder has not played since round five after leaving training early.

Speaking to 3AW on Thursday night, Cameron said Griffen should be fit to play next week.

"He's trained all week this week. Touch wood, he'll be right for the Swans game next week," Cameron said.

"Whether that's in the AFL or the lower level, we'll just have to see how much training he's absorbed over these few weeks. We're hopeful it's in the AFL and he's ready to go.

Griffen sits 12th in the competition for clearances per game through his five matches.

The Giants face the Sydney Swans in round 12 on Sunday, June 12 at Spotless Stadium, with the NEAFL game the curtain raiser.
