MITCH Clark is on the cusp of playing his first game for Geelong this season when the Cats take on the Sydney Swans at Simonds Stadium on Friday night.

Clark, who has not played at AFL level since injuring his calf in round nine last season, is finally ready to resume his injury-interrupted 105-game career.

Cats coach Chris Scott said the tall forward had done enough in his four games in the VFL to prove he was ready to play.

"He'll (Clark) come into the frame," Scott said.

"He's available, we just need to make a decision on whether that's the best thing for the team in the longer term.

"We've got eight weeks before we play finals, if we're good enough. The priority is that he's at his best towards that period."

After planning to be ready for the season opener against Hawthorn, Clark re-injured his calf in January.

He then suffered a setback in his recovery in February, pushing his return date back even further.

The 28-year-old returned via the VFL at the start of June, booting 10 goals in four games, including a bag of five against Box Hill.

Although Clark would be ready to slot straight back in, Geelong faces a tough choice on who would make way for the power forward.

The worry is the Cats would be too tall with Zac Smith, Rhys Stanley and Clark in the same team.

"It's an interesting one because we've got a few players available in that position as well so things like the old 'team balance' will come into it as well," Scott said.

"Through the pre-season we were certainly open to playing a taller team; it hasn't really worked out that way but it's an option that's very much alive for us."

Midfield recruit Scott Selwood will also play his first game for the Cats after off-season ankle surgery. The former Eagle will line up in the VFL against the Northern Blues on Saturday.

"It's been a long and thorough rehab, and when he was a bit slower than what we'd hoped post-Christmas the view was always that we'd get it exactly right, so when he does come back into the team in the latter part of the season he's ready to go," Scott said.

"The match fitness is going to take a bit of time but a bit like Mitch Clark it's going to depend on how he goes, there'll be no pressure on him to perform."

Scott said the Cats were also weighing up whether to bring Nakia Cockatoo straight back into the senior team.

Cockatoo played a half of football in the VFL before the bye on his way back from a knee injury sustained against West Coast in round seven.

"Ideally we'll play him this week. He's done a fair bit of running, so it's not as if he's been idle for the six or seven weeks he'd missed," Scott said.

"It's hard to work out what the best course of action will be, but training this week will be as good an indication as any."
