DELAYS to a $22 million Gold Coast AFL training facility have been raised in federal parliament, with the government blaming the country's biggest construction union for the setback.
Trade Minister Steven Ciobo said the Gold Coast Suns' facility had been delayed by the "militant and extreme" Construction Forestry Mining and Energy union.
"What we see reported in today's papers, though, Mr Speaker, is this investment, once again, like other investments across the city, has been delayed by the CFMEU," the Gold Coast MP said during question time on Tuesday.
Gold Coast Suns' chief executive Andrew Travis said the completion of the facility had been pushed back by about two months due to union strikes.
"The wider precinct project has slipped back as a result of the industrial action and we've been caught up in that," he said.
Travis said the club had hoped to move into the facility at the start of November in time for the beginning of pre-season.
"Our players and administration have been extremely patient over the last seven years waiting for a permanent place to call home, and are all looking forward to moving across to our home early in 2017," he said.
The Suns' training facility will form part of a larger $126 million precinct for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The federal government committed $15 million towards the Suns' facility in 2015.
The CFMEU has been contacted for comment.
