JAKE Long, the son of Essendon champion and 1993 Norm Smith medallist Michael, has re-signed with the Bombers.

The 20-year-old, who made his debut in round 21 against Gold Coast and played the final three games of the season, has inked a one-year contract extension for 2017.

"It was a dream come true to play my first senior game of football this year and I’m really grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to continue my career next season," Long said.

"As a team, we know we have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but I think we showed some exciting signs this year. 

"The coaches have been really clear about the areas of my game I need to work on and I'm already looking forward to getting stuck into another pre-season with the rest of my teammates."

Long's father is one of the most revered players at the Bombers after playing in two premierships (1993 and 2000) in his 190 games in red and black, and is considered one of the all-time great indigenous players.

Jake Long is a product of the Dons' James Hird Academy and was taken with pick 47 in the 2014 rookie draft.

The speedy and skillful youngster has battled injury in his first two seasons at the Bombers.

He averaged 11 disposals in his three games against the Suns, Bulldogs and Carlton, and has impressed with his desire to get better.

"Jake has worked incredibly hard on the training track, his determination to improve as a player has been outstanding," coach John Worsfold said.

"He is wiry and fast, a strong tackler, has a lot of raw talent and is well-respected by his teammates both on and off the field.

"Another strong pre-season will give him the opportunity to improve his game further, so we’re really pleased he’ll continue his career at Essendon."

Long will join Essendon's first-to-fourth-year teammates – and the 10 banned players returning to the club – when pre-season training kicks-off at Tullamarine on Monday.
