SIX CLUBS will wear specially designed guernseys this weekend to commemorate the Anzac Day round.
On Saturday night at Etihad Stadium, in a club first, the Western Bulldogs will wear a jumper honouring players who served their country, with the names printed on the red hoop. The jumper also carries a poppy and the words 'Lest We Forget'.
The Brisbane Lions will pay tribute to the Australian armed forces and fallen armed personnel, with the Rising Sun and 7th Brigade logos on the front, set against a maroon poppy pattern and camouflage background.
The words 'Lest We Forget' appear on the back. The 7th Brigade was first raised in 1915 and saw action in Gallipoli and on the Western Front. The brigade is now based in Brisbane.
In the Sunday night game at the MCG, Melbourne and Richmond will pay tribute to Frank 'Checker' Hughes, a giant of both clubs who also served Australia in World War I.
Melbourne will wear a guernsey carrying the silhouette of a soldier positioned against the red yoke. The yoke on the Demons' strip represents the going down of the sun, while the blue symbolises the ground upon which the soldier stands. The words 'Lest We Forget' are watermarked on the back of the guernsey.
The Richmond jumper pays tribute to servicemen and women, past and present. This is the Tigers' first Anzac Day-themed guernsey and features the RSL's Anzac Appeal logo, remembrance poppy and RSL 100-year logo on the front and 'Lest we Forget' on the back.
On Monday, in the round's final game, Collingwood players will don a jumper featuring a single poppy, on the left-hand side, with the words 'Lest We Forget' underneath. The back of the guernsey features names of fallen club players.
The traditional red sash on the Essendon guernsey will incorporate 20 poppies – the symbolic flower of remembrance – representing the 20 known club players who died while serving during the Boer War and both world wars.
The Bombers' jumper also features the RSL's Anzac Appeal logo on the front and the club's World War I heritage logo on the back.
