STAR Swan Dan Hannebery could overtake Nat Fyfe to win this year's AFLCA Player of the Year Award if he produces another big game in Saturday night's clash against Gold Coast.

Fyfe has held top position on the leaderboard for much of the season, but his late-season struggles with injury and form has opened the door for Hannebery.

The gun Swan took full advantage against St Kilda on Sunday, polling nine votes to draw within six of Fyfe, who is stranded on 100 votes.

Hannebery needs seven votes in the final round of the year to claim the award, while if he polls six, both players will share the honour.

The award has only been shared once, when Adam Goodes and Simon Goodwin tied in 2006.

Hannebery is the only challenger to Fyfe, who will claim the award if the Swan has a quiet game against the Suns.

Every round the AFL coaches vote for the best players from their game. The coaches vote for five players, giving them a mark from 1-5.

The maximum a player can score is 10 (with five votes from both coaches).
