AFL CHIEF executive Gillon McLachlan says it would be amazing if Fremantle and West Coast squared off this year in the first all-WA grand final.
The Dockers and the Eagles finished in the top two spots at the end of the home and away season and will host qualifying finals at Domain Stadium against Sydney and Hawthorn respectively this weekend.
"Any result is a good result as there are eight great teams in the finals this year," McLachlan said on Monday at the official launch of the finals series.
"But when you have got the two Western Australian teams finishing one-two you have to contemplate an all-West Australian final.
"I think it would be an amazing thing to see 40,000 people coming across the Nullarbor, descending on Melbourne and bringing that West Australian passion to Melbourne."
The scheduling of the Western Bulldogs' game at the MCG, rather than at their preferred venue at Etihad Stadium, has also created debate.
But McLachlan said the MCG was always the preferred venue, based on the capacity. The MCG's capacity is about 100,000 people, compared to the 53,359 Etihad Stadium can hold.
"We scheduled that game there because we didn't want to be in a position where we were selling out a final when we have a venue carrying more than the expected capacity," McLachlan said.
"We haven't played a final at Etihad since 2007 and we contemplate access first."
McLachlan would not commit when asked of his tip for this year's Grand Final, although he believes Friday night's West Coast-Hawthorn qualifying final in Perth will have a significant bearing on this year's combatants.
