GEELONG youngster Jarrad Jansen has requested a trade to the Brisbane Lions, citing a desire for more playing opportunities.

The 20-year-old, drafted from East Fremantle at No.36 in the 2013 AFL Draft, is out of contract following a promising second season in the VFL.

Lions recruiting boss Peter Schwab confirmed the 192cm midfielder was keen to head north.

"We've been tracking his progress this year and he's developed nicely," Schwab said.

"He's been at a great club and he's a young guy looking for an opportunity. We hope we can give him that opportunity to develop in our midfield.

"The Cats are a great club to deal with, so hopefully we'll be able to do something with them (via a trade)."

Despite the Lions facing an exodus of players in recent history, including five in 2013, Schwab said he had no concerns luring the West Australian and the club was hoping to offer him a multi-year contract.

The Lions have been crying out for a big-bodied midfielder to complement their fleet-footed onball brigade.

The Lions’ midfielders include Lewis Taylor (173cm), Dayne Zorko (174cm), Josh Green (176cm), Allen Christensen (177cm), Daniel Rich (183cm), Pearce Hanley and Tom Rockliff (185cm).

Jansen has failed to play a senior game in his time at the Cats.

A strong 2015 campaign saw him finish second in the Cats’ VFL best and fairest while spending a number of games as senior emergency.
