ESSENDON defender Courtenay Dempsey has joined midfielder Brent Stanton in signing a one-year contract with the Bombers.

The 28-year-old, who is suspended for the first three games of the 2016 season because of a dangerous tackle on Brett Deledio in round 22, has agreed to terms on a new deal.

Having met with the Bombers' new coach John Worsfold, Dempsey said he was increasingly motivated for not only next year but for the upcoming pre-season.

"I'm really happy to have re-signed with the Essendon footy club, I love living in Melbourne and playing in front of the big Bomber crowds each week," Dempsey told the club's website.

"Spending time with 'Woosha' and talking to him about the role he sees me playing this season makes me really excited about what 2016 can bring for us as a team and a club.

"Woosha has made it really clear what he expects from me this season, I'm excited about tackling this pre-season head on, and as a team I feel we have plenty to prove in 2016."

Dempsey played 13 games this season and spent time in the forward half in his last four AFL appearances after a VFL stint.

Stanton also signed on for 2016 this week with an achievable trigger clause for a further season in 2017 worked into his contract.
