HAWTHORN will be looking to keep its hopes of winning a third straight premiership alive when it takes on Adelaide in a semi-final at the MCG next Friday night.

The reigning premier was comprehensively beaten by West Coast by 32 points in the qualifying final at Domain Stadium.

But the experienced Hawks will be out to atone for a poor performance to give themselves the chance of taking on Fremantle in a preliminary final. That match has been confirmed for 6.20pm local time on Friday night (September 25) at Domain Stadium.

The Hawks will also be sweating on the fitness of key playmakers Jack Gunston (ankle) and Isaac Smith (knee).

Adelaide made its way through to the semi-final by downing the Western Bulldogs in an enthralling elimination final at the MCG on Saturday night.

Having taken a battering in a physical clash with Fremantle in the west on Saturday, the other of last year's grand finalists – the Sydney Swans – will also be looking to keep their season alive against North Melbourne at ANZ Stadium next Saturday night.

The Swans could be missing Sam Reid (hamstring), Kieren Jack (knee) and Luke Parker (knee) from their line-up.

Lance Franklin, who missed the club's qualifying final against Fremantle after revealing he was battling a mental health condition, has also been ruled out.

However, small defender Nick Smith (hamstring) is likely to come back into the selection mix for the Swans.

The Kangaroos will travel to the harbour city having beaten the Tigers by 17 points at the MCG on Sunday and determined to make amends for their humiliating 71-point loss to the Swans in last year's preliminary final.

They have their own worries ahead of the clash, with forward Lindsay Thomas sweating on the Match Review Panel after being reported for kicking Richmond's Dylan Grimes in the chest

The winner of the Swans-Roos match will head to Domain Stadium the following weekend to face a red-hot West Coast on Saturday, September 26. A time for that match is yet to be confirmed.
