JACK Gunston remains in doubt for Hawthorn's cut-throat semi-final against Adelaide after the star forward failed to train with his teammates at Waverley on Monday afternoon.
Gunston suffered an ankle injury when his right leg buckled underneath him during the fourth quarter of the Hawks' 32-point qualifying final loss to West Coast in Perth on Friday night.
He had ice on his right knee and ankle after the match and was sent for scans when the Hawks arrived back in Melbourne.
The 23-year-old is the Hawks' leading goalkicker this season with 53 majors and his absence would be a huge blow if he loses the race against time to face his former club at the MCG.
"He'll give himself every chance to play and we'll see how we go. We all flew in pretty early Saturday morning, I think he had scans Saturday morning," teammate Jarryd Roughead said on Monday.
"We haven't relied on one bloke all year. I think we've got five or six blokes who have kicked over 20 goals this year, so it's not like it's a one-man or two-man forward line – and that's what it's been like the past couple of years.
"If 'Gunners' doesn't play then I dare say someone will definitely come in and play their role."
Speedy wingman Isaac Smith (knee) appeared to have pulled up well from the loss in Perth and trained with the main group.
Earlier, swingman Ryan Schoenmakers and half-forward James Sicily were among the Hawks reserves who trained in a short session separate from the main group.
Schoenmakers' flexibility and experience could give him the edge at the selection table for the Crows clash if Gunston is ruled unfit.
Premiership defender Matt Spangher is also pushing hard for a recall and the Hawks' record of 22 wins from 23 games with the cult big man in the side is significant.
Spangher has played the past two VFL matches after coming back from a second hamstring injury and he trained with the senior group on Monday.
