MAGPIE-turned-Saint Nathan Freeman has provided the best evidence yet that his hamstring curse could be over, amassing a phenomenal 46 possessions in three quarters of a VFL reserves game on Saturday.
Before Freeman took the field for the development league team of St Kilda's VFL affiliate Sandringham, in his first proper match in two years, the Saints were hoping he would merely get through the game unscathed.
After all, the No. 10 pick from the 2013 NAB AFL Draft hadn't played a single AFL game in two seasons at Collingwood and suffered another setback this pre-season.
But Freeman couldn't have been more dominant, with his 19-kick, 27-handball and one-goal effort piloting his team to a seven-point win over Box Hill Hawks at Box Hill City Oval.
The speedy 20-year-old midfielder set a cracking pace with 15 touches in the first term and maintained that breakneck speed for his next two quarters before sitting out the final term.
The only apparent problem to arise from the game for Freeman was a serious bout of leather poisoning.
The Zebras have a bye next week so Freeman will presumably target a VFL seniors return against Footscray at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on April 23, in his quest to achieve his long-awaited AFL debut.
