Other Incidents Assessed:
Contact between Hawthorn’s Ben Stratton and the GWS Giants’ Nathan Wilson from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The panel said that Wilson was preparing to kick with Stratton seeking to smother the ball. Stratton attempted to smother and then braced for inevitable contact between the two players. Wilson’s momentum after his kick carried him forward and there was an accidental head clash between the pair. It was the view of the panel that no further action was required.
Contact between Hawthorn’s Luke Hodge and the GWS Giants’ Nathan Wilson from the second quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Wilson has the ball and is running towards goal, being pursued by Hawthorn’s Ben McEvoy. Hodge comes from the side and extends his left arm, with his hand open, in a bid to impede the progress of the GWS’ player. Wilson seeks to avoid the contact, by lowering his body, and Hodge makes high contact above the shoulder with the open hand. After speaking to the umpire who paid a free kick at the time and who had a clear view of the incident, it was the view of the panel the action was not unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.
