RICHMOND ruckman Ivan Maric will retire at the end of the season.

The former Crow has not played in the senior team this year, although he remains in the selection mix.

The 31-year-old has lined up in eight games for the Tigers' VFL side and has played a mentoring role to the side's fellow rucks, including his cousin Ivan Soldo.

Maric told the club of his decision on Thursday morning.

"I believe it's the right time and the right decision for the club and for me, and that makes me feel at peace and happy with the call," Maric said.

"I want to see out the year by preparing my absolute best, to give myself the chance to compete at my best for the team.

"I won't be pulling up short. I want to finish all the way to the finish line."

Maric was drafted in 2004 by Adelaide with pick No.40 and was traded to Richmond in 2011.

He assumed cult hero status, largely for his mullet hairdo, but in his prime was nominated for the All Australian squad in 2012.

Toby Nankervis has assumed the No.1 ruck role at Punt Road Oval in 2017.

Maric has played 157 games to date.
