IT WAS Greater Western Sydney's turn to get one back from Carlton in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft.
The Blues made an art form of recycling Giants footballers in recent years, but the New South Wales club turned the tables somewhat in drafting speedster Dylan Buckley on Monday.
The son of Carlton's triple premiership star Jim Buckley scattered 39 games across six seasons at Ikon Park – including a career-best 18 in 2015 – but only one this year before being delisted.
Buckley's pace is a genuine weapon on a wing or across half-back, but his decision-making held him back during his time at the Blues.
The 24-year-old was not the only Carlton discard to receive an AFL lifeline, with Nick Holman's strong two seasons for SANFL club Central District earning him another shot at Gold Coast.
Holman, 22, played nine games for the Blues in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
The left-footed midfielder from Kyabram in regional Victoria won the second-most disposals in the South Australian state league this year and finished seventh in the Magarey Medal.
A third ex-Carlton player, Billy Gowers, also reignited his AFL career playing up forward for Footscray in the VFL.
Gowers booted 20 goals in 19 matches, including a three-goal effort against Essendon in the finals, after spending most of his time down back in two seasons on the Blues' list.
The 21-year-old former Oakleigh Charger, who stands 186cm, failed to play an AFL match for Carlton, but he will get another chance with the Western Bulldogs.
Buckley, Holman and Gowers were three of 42 list outgoings since coach Brendon Bolton and list manager Stephen Silvagni united at Carlton at the end of 2015.
