1. Hawkins eyes Coleman
Back-to-back bags of seven goals has Tom Hawkins making a late charge for his first Coleman Medal. After a fortnight to remember, Hawkins' season tally grew to 48 majors, four behind North Melbourne's leader Ben Brown who faces West Coast in Hobart on Sunday. Hawkins had the better of Lion Harris Andrews, back for his first game after four weeks on the sidelines due to concussion. Hawkins now sits in second place ahead of Jack Riewoldt and Lance Franklin – both with 44 for the season. The Cats spearhead now sits 20 goals adrift of his career-best season of 68 which included two finals in 2014.

2. Robinson's clamp
Seeing Joel Selwood blanketed by Demon James Harmes last week, the Lions deployed hard-nut Mitch Robinson on the Cats skipper. It worked to full effect in the first half, Selwood held to just eight disposals, even spending time at half back during the second term in an attempt to shake Robinson. Robinson moved to Gary Ablett to start the third quarter, the Geelong superstar adding just seven disposals to his 21 touches in the first half. With the game slipping away, Robinson moved forward for the final term, Ablett surpassing 30 disposals for the ninth time this year to finish with 38.

3. Falcons' poster boys
Cat Jack Henry and Lion Josh Walker brought a hush over GMHBA Stadium during the third term, cannoning into a point post at the City End. Running back with the flight and eyes only on the ball, Henry and Walker collided with the post, the first-year Cat feeling the full brunt of the padding. Fortunately, the pair both got to their feet as the post continued to swing. Both former Geelong Falcons, the duo formed part of 12 graduates from the TAC Cup club on the ground. The others: Luke Hodge, Darcy Gardiner, Alex Witherden, Lewis Taylor, Allen Christensen, Rhys Mathieson (Lions) and Tom Stewart, Jed Bews, Patrick Dangerfield and Gary Ablett (Cats).

4. Limping Cat
Tom Stewart's first-term left ankle injury saw the All Australian defender-in-waiting ruled out for the remainder of the game. Spotted in a moon boot when re-emerging from the rooms, Stewart will head for scans early next week ahead of Friday night's blockbuster with Richmond. It was the second time this season the 25-year-old has injured his left ankle, limping from the ground early in Geelong's round 12 win over North Melbourne before playing out the match. The Cats are expected to be without Harry Taylor next week, still recovering from a tendon complaint in his left foot he injured in round 16.
5. Scrappy kicking
It was a tale of two halves with inaccurate kicking from both sides. Daniel McStay's easy miss in the first term from 25 metres out was compounded by Jarrod Berry's behind before half-time. Sam Menegola made Berry pay after receiving in the centre square from the resulting kick-out, finding Jack Henry for one of his three goals – the ultimate 12-point play. After half-time, two snapping misses from Tim Kelly and one from Lachie Fogarty could have buried the game earlier for Geelong before Hawkins took over in attack.
