FORMER Geelong star Steve Johnson could be reunited with his premiership teammate Gary Ablett at Gold Coast if the Suns' skipper gets his way.

Ablett has asked the Suns' hierarchy to consider recruiting Johnson after he spoke to the 31-year-old to find out his plans for 2016 and beyond.

The Cats did not renew the triple premiership player's contract at the end of the season but Johnson is keen to continue his career with another club with an eye to moving from a playing role into a coaching position.

Ablett told Channel 7 he rang Johnson after he played his last game for the Cats and told him he would speak to the club on his behalf if he were interested in continuing his career.

He said Johnson had expressed his desire to play before coaching at the club he ultimately joined.

"I'm pretty sure he is keen to go on for another 12-24 months with a coaching deal afterwards," Ablett said.

"That is something the club will talk to his manager about and if we feel he is the right fit then he will be running around for the Gold Coast next year."

The Suns have expressed a desire to recruit mature aged players to the club but are unlikely to make any decisions on which they chase until after they have traded out Harley Bennell and Charlie Dixon and potentially acquired some younger talent.

The Suns are taking a focused approach to the trade period and targeting specific players – AFL.com.au understands one player they are interested in is Collingwood defender Paul Seedsman.

Johnson kicked 452 goals in 253 games with the Cats and won the 2007 Norm Smith Medal.

He was a key player in three flags.
