HIGHLY touted draftee Josh Kelly's elite endurance has again been on show on day one of Greater Western Sydney's pre-season, with the third-year midfielder taking out the Giants' first time trial.
The former No.2 NAB AFL Draft pick led all the way in the Giants' 3km test at Tom Wills Oval in hot conditions on Monday morning.
The 20-year-old crossed the line ahead of top draftee Lachie Whitfield and young midfielder Jake Barrett.
"It's always the dreaded ‘three k’ on the first day but it's what we set ourselves and it's good to get it over and done with," Kelly told the club's website.
"All the boys are looking really fit, 'Whitters' (Whitfield) pushed me all the way.
"It's a tough event and none of the boys really look forward to it but it sets us up for a good pre-season.
"Coming back into Sydney weather is always going to be a big tester but I felt pretty good and I'm setting myself for a big pre-season."
Kelly equalled the 18 games he played in his debut year of 2014 this season to take his tally to 36 heading into 2016.
He's set himself a pre-season objective of improving his physique before the Giants start footy-related drills.
"I think for me [my goal is] just to stay on the track and put on a bit of size but in terms of specific footy goals I'll sit down with the coaches and my mentor coach and sort a few things out come game time and what I can do to prepare myself for the games," he said.
Second-year Giants Pat McKenna and Caleb Marchbank finished in the top five of Monday's run in Sydney.
Their fifth-year teammates face the same test this Saturday when their training starts before the rest of the list resumes on November 23.
The Giants were one of 10 AFL clubs that kicked off their pre-seasons on Monday with the first to four-year players returning to training.
Other players to top their respective time trials were Jack Newnes (St Kilda), Jack Crisp (Collingwood) and Kane Mitchell (Port Adelaide).
