HAWTHORN running machine Isaac Smith's five-year reign as the club's time trial champion has come to an end, with father-son recruit Finn Maginness taking over the mantle as the Hawks' premier runner.

Maginness took the honours ahead of exciting youngster Changkuoth Jiath and Smith in the club's 2km time trial on Wednesday.

"It felt unreal to get the win," Maginness told hawthornfc.com.au.

"Had the boys pushing me all the way, CJ ran really well, Isaac as well.

"I didn't get them by much, so I think it'll be on again next time."

Smith held a mortgage on the race having been unbeaten since 2015, but relinquished the crown to Maginness, who was known for his endurance in his junior career.

"I think he was alright, he just had a baby during the week, so I think his mind was probably elsewhere, but he was alright, he ran well," Maginness said.

Maginness – son of two-time premiership defender Scott Maginness – was taken by the Hawks with the 29th pick in last year's NAB AFL Draft when they matched a bid from North Melbourne.
