BRISBANE Lions marquee player Sabrina Frederick-Traub will be on hand to provide leadership advice and guidance for participants in this week's AFL National Female Diversity Championships.

More than 200 young players from indigenous and multicultural backgrounds are taking part in the week-long carnival in Shepparton in Victoria's north, representing all states and territories.

This is the fourth year the carnival is being held, with 50 players in line for selection for the Rio Tinto AFL Woomeras and Medleys leadership and development programs at the end of the championships. (This year's Woomeras squad – for players from indigenous backgrounds – is in Melbourne for AFL Grand Final week and will take part in a game at Punt Road Oval on Thursday).

"On the back of the momentum of the AFL Women's competition, these championships showcase the talent of young females from across the country," said Ali Fahour, the AFL's head of multicultural and indigenous partnerships and programs.

"Having Sabrina involved in a leadership capacity will allow participants the opportunity to engage with a role model," he said.

Matches are being played at Rumbalara Recreation Reserve and Deakin Reserve, with the finals and closing ceremony at Deakin Reserve on Thursday morning from 8am (EST).
