Fielding a side low on match experience last Friday night, the Saints young brigade of up and coming players impressed in what was the Club’s first on-field appearance for Season 2011.

The Round One NAB Cup clashes against Brisbane and Essendon saw ten players who have not played a senior game for the Saints take to the field, with many pushing a positive case for senior selection this year.

Tom Ledger, the Saints third pick in last years NAB AFL Draft was a standout. The Western Australian showed great pace and used the ball with precise foot skills. He collected 6 possessions and 3 marks in game one and then backed up with five possessions and a classy goal in game two.

Daniel Archer, the 19 year old rookie from Tasmania was another who took the eye of onlookers. He presented magnificently and contested in the air well using his solid 193 cm frame.

Third year player Alistair Smith put forward a strong case for selection with an impressive game in the midfield. He was dynamic in game one against the Lions, accumulating 10 possessions, 2 marks and a goal despite suffering a heavy knock.

Irish recruit Tommy Walsh looked comfortable in defence in both games. He competed well and was effective by both hand and foot.

Jamie Cripps, Will Johnson, Sam Crocker, Tom Simpkin and Nick Winmar all experienced vital game time in St Kilda’s first hit-out and are a good chance to be given another opportunity in Round 2 of the NAB Cup this Saturday night.
