A CRUCIAL member of Geelong’s premiership jigsaw could play his first game of 2008 next week when the Cats take on Richmond at the MCG.
One-time Tiger Brad Ottens, yet to play this season as he battles a plantar fasciitis condition in his foot, is a chance to return against his old club in what would be his season debut.
Whether he returns to football next week or not, the Cats are certain to take a safety-first approach with one of their most important players.
The same could likely be said for star midfielder Gary Ablett, who despite having missed two matches – including playing for Victoria in Saturday night’s Hall of Fame Tribute match – will be touch and go to make the round eight clash with the Tigers.
However, it is Ottens’ return that is most eagerly awaited at Skilled Stadium.
When asked if the premiership ruckman was a chance to take the field next weekend for the first time since a reserves practice match in March, Geelong assistant football manager Steven Hocking said club officials remained optimistic.
“Certainly that’s what we’re aiming for,” Hocking said.
“He’ll be tested later in the week, so we’ll see how his week progresses – likewise with Ablett … Both those guys will be tested and we’ll see if they’re available to play.”
Just what route Ottens would be forced to take to make his return back to AFL football remains a mystery, with Hocking saying he was unsure whether coach Mark Thompson would immediately inject his star into the line-up or whether he would give him valuable game time in the VFL.
“That’ll be up to the match committee,” Hocking said.
The Cats have called on three youngsters to carry their ruck duties throughout the first seven rounds of the season.
Mark Blake has been Geelong’s No.1 ruckman, while Trent West and, more recently, Shane Mumford have also enjoyed stints for the reigning premiers.
The possible return of Ottens comes on top of news that all 11 Cats involved in Saturday’s Hall of Fame Tribute match would be fit to tackle the Tigers, despite defender Darren Milburn leaving the field in the third term after receiving a heavy knock.
“We’re all good,” Hocking said.
“Milburn just bruised some ribs, but he’s the only one. He should be available to play next week, and there’s no concerns with any others which is good.”
