A spontaneous round of applause broke out at North Melbourne’s Annual General Meeting last night after members were told the Arden Street redevelopment would go ahead.

After decades of discussion and planning, the club’s directors voted unanimously in favour of finally bringing the $16M project to life.

Building preparations should commence as early as Monday February 2nd at the site.

Specialists in sport and recreational projects, the Hacer Group was awarded the contract for the project and will be aiming to have the multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art facility ready by the end of 2009.

With the inclusion of a Learning and Life Centre, gymnasium, State Fencing Centre, theatrette and class room, the new building will be a valuable, unique and innovative community resource.

In partnership with the Australian Multicultural Foundation and the Scanlon Foundation, the Club anticipates the Learning and Life Centre will provide children and adults from all walks of life with opportunities to develop their skills in a modern open classroom with innovative educational programs.

North Melbourne Chief Executive Eugene Arocca again acknowledged the financial support from the club’s key project stakeholders.

“We thank the State Government, in particular Ministers James Merlino and Bronywn Pike, the Melbourne City Council, the AFL, the Federal Government and the Scanlon Foundation for their significant contributions. Without them, this dream simply would not be a reality today,” Arocca said.

“We’re now seeking interest from potential naming rights sponsors for the Learning and Life Centre as well as the Arden Street oval.”
