AN ALREADY open NAB AFL Rising Star field has been blown even further apart with Monday's news that Greater Western Sydney forward Jeremy Cameron is likely to be ineligible.

Considered one of the leading chances to win the award, the exciting key position prospect was charged with a level two striking offence for a hit on Hawthorn's Clinton Young on Sunday.

The MRP assessed the offence as reckless, low impact and high contact, drawing a total of 125 demerit points.

He can escape with a reprimand if he enters an early guilty plea, but such discounts don't apply to award eligibility.

Players charged with incidents worth more than 100 points cannot win the Brownlow Medal or the Rising Star, regardless of discounts for good records or guilty pleas.

If the Giants choose to take Cameron's case to the tribunal in a bid to clear his name, the 19-year-old risks a one-match suspension.

If Cameron doesn't go to the tribunal and win, Western Bulldogs second-year midfielder Mitch Wallis may become the frontrunner for the Rising Star.

Of the other nominees up until round 14, Geelong's Steven Motlop, Giants midfield pair Stephen Coniglio and Dylan Shiel, Essendon defender Jake Carlisle and Adelaide's Daniel Talia also have claims.

Gold Coast's Josh Caddy and Richmond half-back Brandon Ellis have yet to be nominated, but could also attract votes should they join the field before year's end.

Cameron's teammate Toby Greene - another standout among this year's contenders - is also ineligible, having been cited for rough conduct in round eight.

The round 15 nominee will be announced on Tuesday morning.
