A KEY forward that can score bags of goals is ominous enough, but Jesse Hogan’s newfound determination to have an influence in the midfield has Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin optimistic his young key forward is setting himself up for a strong season.
Hogan was arguably the Demons' best player in their 26-point win over Brisbane at the Gabba, scoring five goals and taking nine marks in a dominant display in Melbourne’s forward line.
He also accumulated 22 possessions, which Goodwin said was indicative of Hogan’s determination to make an impact in the midfield in addition to his work inside the 50m arc.

“Jesse has worked really hard at being involved in the game for a lot longer, not only as a forward but also as a midfielder, and it’s really added another string to his bow which keeps him in the game,” Goodwin said.
“Getting him up through the midfield and then releasing him forward again actually provides him with momentum to stay in the game.
“I think his forward craft has improved, he certainly is really commanding that position deep inside forward 50m.
“He has done a hell of a lot of hard work over the summer, both as a midfielder and as a forward and he got the rewards tonight. He is setting himself up for a really strong season.”
Talking points: Brisbane v Melbourne
Also starring for the Demons at the Gabba was fellow forward Jeff Garlett, who looked lively all night and scored two vital goals to wrest momentum away from the Lions after they drew level in the fourth quarter.
“It’s great to see Jeffy get back into some really strong form, I think we need him up and going,” Goodwin said.
“His pressure’s outstanding and his ability to finish was great tonight.

While the Demons allowed a 42-point lead to evaporate down to scores level in the final quarter, Goodwin said he was happy with the way his team responded.
“They worked their way back into the game, which is full credit to Brisbane, but I loved the way we responded at that point when the scores were level,” he said.
