ESSENDON'S much-discussed ruck combination still hasn't been settled, despite the Bombers finishing their home and away season with a comeback win against Port Adelaide on Sunday night.
All season long, Essendon has been juggling David Hille, Paddy Ryder and Tom Bellchambers in the ruck.
Bellchambers was dropped for Sunday's win over Port Adelaide but could still find his way back for week one of the finals series, which is likely to be an elimination final against Carlton.
Speaking after the win, Hille admitted there was a sense of horses for courses, in that the likely MCG destination and Carlton's combination of Robbie Warnock and Matthew Kreuzer would have a bearing on the decision.
"I'm not sure. Carlton are fairly strong in the ruck so it will be interesting to see which way the coaches go. If we were playing here [at Etihad Stadium] we might stay with the two ruckmen but it's likely we're playing at the MCG," Hille said.
"We'll have to see what mix they go with and see if Paddy and I can't hold off their big men department just between the two of us."
Hille was an integral part of Essendon's seven-goal fightback in the final quarter to wrestle back the lead held by Port Adelaide for the entire second half.
But he said he alone didn't decide to take the game into his own hands and that every Essendon player felt the duty to step up.
"I'd like to think that everyone has the responsibility and wants to take on responsibility for the performance of the team," he said.
"We're all in it together and as much as it starts with me, I'm there to play my role and obviously things turned late which was good for us."
Hille conceded that perhaps Essendon underestimated Port Adelaide, which had only won two games for the year but led by 34 points early in the final quarter.
"Robbie Gray kicked six which was a massive effort and John Butcher kicked four. That is a massive night for those two guys and very impressive performances. We were probably a bit lucky to get away with it," he said.
"The game opened up a touch when we kicked a couple of goals. Perhaps they tightened up and got the ball on the outside a bit and managed to make a hit on the scoreboard which was what we had trouble doing most of the night."
Hille said there was room for improvement before the finals but that the Bombers would benefit from having the week off and the likely inclusions of Heath Hocking and Dustin Fletcher.
"There's plenty we can work on. We can always work on something whether we win or lose. We'll go back and assess how we played tomorrow in our review," he said.
"We get a couple of guys back next week including 'Buddha' Hocking who I think is integral to our team so we will give it a crack in the first week of the finals."
