The Sydney Swans Reserves have suffered their first loss of the AFL Canberra season, going down to cellar dwellers Tuggeranong.

The day had started well, as the club marked Pink Lady Day with Swans’ Ambassador and the Federal member for Canberra, Annette Ellis, throwing up a pink football at the start of the game.

But it was a tough outing from then on, and the Swans eventually lost by 53 points despite impressive performances from Campbell Heath who played on ball, Daniel Currie in the ruck and Dylan McNeil in the midfield. Henry Playfair, who played at centre half back and centre half forward, winger Taylor Gilchrist and Patrick Veszpremi, on ball and at half back, were also named in the Swans’ best players.

The Swans won the first quarter, ending the term just two points up. Heath kicked the Swans’ first goal in the opening minute and a few minutes later Trent Dennis-Lane kicked one on the run before Tuggeranong piled on four in the next 10 minutes. It was not until the 22 minute mark that the Swans scored again, with top-up player Daniel Dickerson goaling after some good teamwork. Jackson Potter, another top-up player, kicked the final goal of the term on the run.

Tuggeranong opened the scoring in the second term and at the five minute mark Playfair kicked his first after a strong mark 50 metres from goal. By halftime the scoreboard was reflecting the game, with Tuggeranong leading by 22 points after adding another four goals to their score.

The Swans narrowed the margin by four points in the third term kicking five goals for the quarter. Lewis Johnston kicked their first in the first minute, Dennis-Lane marked at 50 metres and goaled a few minutes later and Potter kicked his second. At the 18 minute mark Johnston made it two for the quarter, taking a mark and kicking truly. At the end of the quarter Dennis-Lane kicked a smart goal from the goal square. The third was a better quarter for the Swans, with ruckman Currie a stand-out.

But the final quarter was all Tuggeranong. They piled on the goals in the last term to blow the margin out to 53 points at the final siren.

In the first 10 minutes they kicked three goals before Gilchrist answered with a goal from 50 metres out. At the 14 minute mark Tuggeranong kicked its third for the quarter and two minutes later Dickerson slotted his second after a mark on the goal line. Tuggeranong then kicked five more before Playfair took a mark and goaled after the siren.

The reserves round six game is against Belconnen on Saturday May 22 at 2pm at Manuka Oval. There are no AFL Canberra games scheduled for this week.
