GEELONG assistant coach Blake Caracella says the Cats are set to give their youngsters a chance to prove themselves against one of the competition's best teams in Saturday night's NAB Cup qualifying final against St Kilda.

With many of Geelong's stars certain to miss the match, draftees including Cameron Guthrie and George Horlin-Smith will get an opportunity to face the Saints.

"We'd like to keep winning but we're going to be playing kids as well," Caracella said.

"Hopefully we can win and play the young kids at the same time."

The Geelong coaches were particularly impressed by the efforts of Guthrie and Horlin-Smith in Sunday's NAB Cup wins over North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.

Guthrie delighted Cats fans by collecting six possessions and taking a couple of solid marks against the Kangaroos while wearing No.29, which previously adorned Gary Ablett's back.

"It will be great to get those players another game and some more experience before the home and away season," Caracella said.

Young ruckman Nathan Vardy was touted as the big improver of Geelong's tough pre-season on the training track, but he wasn't sighted in round one of the NAB Cup and is likely to also sit out the clash with the Saints.

"Nathan had a bit of a setback - a sore leg," Caracella said.

"He might play this week, although he probably won't. We'll have to wait and see."

Geelong's game plan has undergone a few changes since Chris Scott replaced Mark Thompson as coach, and the new boss was happy with what he saw at Skilled Stadium on Sunday.

"The coaches were very happy after the games," Caracella said.

"The players' attack on the footy and their ability to implement the things we'd been working on over the pre-season was fantastic.

"It's been spoken about last year against Collingwood and St Kilda [that] our handball game got us in trouble a fraction.

"If you look at the stats, we did kick the ball more on the weekend. Whether it was a matter of trying to kick the ball more, or the game just eventuated that way, we'll wait and see."
