This Sunday July 11, the Sydney Swans are calling on all families to don the red and white and head to the footy for ‘FUN-DAY’ at the SCG.
Family tickets for the match against North Melbourne are just $40 for two adults and up to four children.
In the lead up to Sunday’s match, some of the Sydney Swans ambassadors and most passionate fans, including Tom Williams, Melissa Doyle and Pia Miranda, share their thoughts on why they love a day out at the football with their families...
Tom Williams:
One of my best memories growing up, is going to the SCG with my Dad to watch Sydney play their very first matches.
Nowadays, nothing beats a Sunday match with my mates, enjoying the game, the winter sun and a few beers to wash it all down.
If you’re lucky to be out there when ‘Kick to Kick’ is on after the match, you’ll love watching Mum’s and Dad’s share goal winning moments with their kids as they kick the footy through the big sticks !
And if that doesn’t get you in, singing the victory song, will make the hairs on your arms stand up.
Melissa Doyle:
Nothing beats decking out in Swans colours, tucking into a hot meat pie and cheering our favourite team onto victory. It's a wonderful family afternoon out ... Especially given the kids scream louder than mum and dad!
And we love the chance to do Kick to Kick after an SCG game - we all pretend we can play! Its a pretty unique experience for the kids especially.
Deborah Hutton:
I get excited wrapping the Swans scarf around my neck with anticipation of a good win. The moment the banner goes up and the boys run through it, it's game on and the crowd tenses. I love being a part of so many loyal supporters, all in red and white and waiting for Pete Hatley, No.1. cheerleader, to start the Sydney chant or a crowd clap.
I sit in the stands with Mum, soak up the cheeky commentary of our footy mates and watch our gorgeous and talented Swans playing their heart out. The pace and excitement of the game keeps me glued to the action. My favourite moment is singing the club song complete with air ukulele...tragic but true!
Tommy Dean:
I love game day more than any other!
I love donning my red and white, wrapping on the scarf (a lovingly handmade one) and heading for the SCG.
I love the excited chatter on the way to the game as we discuss what might happen, who we think might grab a bag of goals and even what snacks we are going to have.
I love the walk across the park towards the SCG. Seeing the hallowed arena looming up as well as gazing back into the skyline of Sydney and once again realising what a beautiful city it is.
I love the people coming from all directions. The smiles and friendships apparent. The good-natured jostling with those in "enemy" colours, and all the kids bouncing and kicking footys.
I love getting to my seat and feeling awash in Red and White! At home with my people about to watch our boys play THE game!
I love the big sign the players run through and admire the dedication of the fans who do so much work.
I love the hooter. One of the most unique sounds I've ever heard, signaling the bounce in the middle and now it is game on!
I love the shared feel of joining voice as one to cheer great play or groan a missed chance. I love, assuming the game went well, singing our song!
I love the trip home with excited yet worn out children who just had a great day out.
I love most of all the memories, which feed into the anticipation of the next game day, which builds on the memories, which when eventually looked back upon is a beautiful vista of happy days spent in perfect company watching the greatest game people play!
Pia Miranda:
My grandfather used to take me to watch the Swans when I was a little girl and I absolutely loved it. Now that I have a daughter I can't wait to take her to her first Swans game in July. Swans games are a fantastic place to take kids. There is such a great friendly atmosphere and it's a wonderful family tradition that I can't wait to pass on.
Lee Furlong:
Nothing better on a chilly day than to rug up in your red and whites, gather all the family together and cheer on the Swannies to victory.
The atmosphere at the ground amongst a sea of red and white is electric. Wonderful way to spend quality time with your family and friends.
One of the great Australian traditions is to head off to the football on the weekend, indulge in your favourite junk food and have a drink with your friends whilst cheering on the Swannies. What more could you want!
Heath Franklin:
Going to the footy every week is an odyssey, you dress in Red and White, make your way into the ground and then cheer and howl and scream as you travel the full spectrum of emotions. The coverage will never be the same because the crowd noise, the smell of the turf and the perspective of the field just cannot be synthesised. Knowing that the noise you make could be what lifts your team to do amazing things is a lot better than shouting at your television.
Mike Willesee Jnr:
Watching the Swannies at the SCG is all about sitting with my Dad and my sisters... screaming until I can hardly speak... giving all we've got to give... and singing Cheer Cheer... maybe eating a pie... and really connecting with my family. I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday.
Ellyse Perry:
I love going to the footy because....It's a great excuse to catch up with friends and family and watch the best team in Sydney play!
I love seeing the sea of red and white sprawled across the stands of the SCG, which has always been my favourite place to watch sport at
Catherine Cox:
"As an athlete there is nothing better than some time off, and it's even better when you get to watch other people doing the hard work! Sorry boys!
I just love being able to sit and relax with my friends (and quite often team mates) and watch the skills of another sport. It's always a great spectacle and I often learn a lot from the Swans too.
Don't think I'll be punting any netballs through the goal anytime soon but there are plenty of other areas that are very similar."
Damien Leith:
"I love going to see the Swans; nothing compares to being right there in the the thick of things, cheering them on with thousands of other fans, soaking up the amazing atmosphere and for me, it's an ideal time to hang out with my two young boys who are mad into it!'
Cynthia Banham:
What I love about going to the footy with my family and friends is the chance to share something I love with the people I love. To share the excitement of a Swans goal, and to share the thrill of a close game, makes the experience even more meaningful. To barrack your heart out and to know your friends and family are with you doing the same is a great feeling, because together you are all contributing to the Swans effort.
Ros Reines:
I love the atmosphere at a Sydney Swans home game. Looking out at a sea of Swans hats and footy scarves is nourishing for the soul - and nothing beats singing the Swans song when you are actually in one of the stands.
It feels great when it’s an edge of the seat Swans game at the SCG and everyone draws in their breath at once before a goal and rises as one to acknowledge some fearless play.
Now that I know where they make the best hot dogs with cheese, onions and spicy sauce (far right side of the Brewongle stand on the ground floor), a Swans at home match is double bliss.
